Save the Date Messages for an Indian Wedding: 25 Wordings in Hindi, Hinglish and English

Twenty-five save-the-date wordings to copy, from a phone script for elders to a one-liner for friends, with what to leave out, when to send it and what to say if the date moves.

By the Sadar Nimantran studio21 min read

In short

A save-the-date message for a wedding gives the couple's names, the date or dates, the city and a line saying the invitation will follow. It leaves out venues and timings not yet final, and asks for no reply unless rooms are being held. Send it once the date and venue are fixed: tell elders by phone first, then send it on WhatsApp, earliest to guests who must travel.

What goes in a save-the-date message, and what stays out?

A save-the-date message needs four things: whose wedding it is, the date or dates, the city, and a line saying the invitation will follow.

Put in

  • The names, and how you are related: "our son [name]" to an elder, first names to friends; elders will want the other family's name and town too.
  • The date, or the first and last dates, so guests know how much leave to take. Beside a festival or tithi, write the date in numbers.
  • The city, and the state for guests from elsewhere.

Leave out

  • Venues and timings that are not final. A wrong time travels further than the correction.
  • A request to reply, unless you are holding rooms for a destination wedding.
  • The list of functions: that belongs on the invitation.

When should the save-the-date go out?

Send the save-the-date once the date is fixed and the venue booked: 3 to 4 months ahead for a wedding in your own city, 5 to 6 months for a destination wedding, and 6 months or more for relatives abroad, as our wedding invitation timeline sets out. Relatives who travel by train need it before booking opens, 60 days before their journey (Ministry of Railways notice on PIB, checked on 4 October 2026). Until the date is final, tell close family by phone and put nothing in writing.

How do you tell elders the date first? (phone call or voice note)

Elders should hear the date from you, on the phone, before they read it on WhatsApp. In many North Indian families the parents ring their own elders, brothers and sisters the day the date is fixed. Treat these scripts as prompts, not lines to read out.

1. Phone call to an elder: what to say (Hindi)

Greet them the way you yourself do, not by their relation to the couple. A man says बोल रहा हूँ and भेज रहा हूँ. If your family does not fix the day by a muhurat, say The last line tells the elder that the written message coming next is from you.

2. Voice note from the couple's brother or sister to an elder (Hinglish script)
Namaste [Nani ji / Tau ji], main [aapka naam] bol raha hoon. Bas itna batana tha ki [bhaiya / didi] ki shaadi ki tareekh pakki ho gayi hai: [date], [shahar] mein. Is voice note ke neeche maine tareekh likh kar bhi bhej di hai, aaram se padh lijiyega. Card baad mein aayega. Aap bas wo din hamare liye khaali rakhiyega. Pranaam.

Keep it under thirty seconds and say your name first; a woman says bol rahi hoon. Type the date under the voice note so it can be read again.

How do parents write a save-the-date in Hindi?

A formal Hindi save-the-date from the parents reads like the opening of the Hindi shaadi card to follow: the couple with चि. and सौ.कां., the other family and their town, the date, the city and a promise of the invitation. Those short forms are explained in our guide to card words such as विनीत and दर्शनाभिलाषी.

3. From the groom's parents to an elder, formal (Hindi)

For a daughter's wedding, write A Sikh family can open with ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ and a Muslim family with the Bismillah, or leave the first line out. Use your family's own greeting and word for the wedding

4. From the bride's parents to relatives (Hindi)
5. For the family WhatsApp group, after the calls (Hindi)

Post this only after every household in the group has had its own call or message. Why that order matters is in our guide to WhatsApp wedding invitation messages.

What is a good save-the-date in Hinglish? (shaadi ki date ka message)

A good Hinglish save-the-date sounds the way you would say it on the phone, with the date and city easy to spot. Punjabi families will find wording in Gurmukhi and in English letters in our guide to Punjabi wedding card matter.

6. From the parents to relatives (Hinglish)
Namaste [naam] ji, Sabse pehle aapko ek khushkhabri deni thi: [bete / beti] [bachche ka naam] ka rishta [hone wali bahu / hone wale damaad ka naam] se pakka ho gaya hai. Shaadi: [date], [shahar] Card thoda baad mein aayega, jab saare function aur jagah final ho jaayein. Abhi bas us hafte koi aur programme mat rakhiyega, shaadi wale ghar ko aapki zaroorat padegi. [aapka naam] aur pariwar
7. From a brother or sister to the cousins (Hinglish)
Cousins, dhyaan dijiye! [Didi / Bhaiya] ki shaadi ki date aa gayi hai: [date], [shahar]. Mummy ne kaha hai sabko personally batana, toh yeh raha personally. Chhuttiyan abhi se maang lo, aur kaun kis function mein kya pehnega, iski planning bhi shuru kar do. Card aur details jaldi aayengi.

What is the formal English wording for a save-the-date?

Formal English wording follows the order of an English card: the parents, the date, the couple, the city, and "Formal invitation to follow". It suits family friends and relatives from other states.

8. From the parents, in the style of a card (English)
Save the Date Mrs [Mother's name] and Mr [Father's name] request that you keep [date or dates] free for the wedding of their son [Groom's name] with [Bride's name] daughter of Mrs [Bride's mother's name] and Mr [Bride's father's name] in [city], [state] Formal invitation to follow

For the bride's side, write "their daughter", put the bride's name first and write "son of" before the groom's parents. This layout also works on a save-the-date picture.

9. From the parents to family friends (English)
Dear [Name] ji, We wanted you to hear it from us before the cards are printed. Our daughter [Bride's name] is to marry [Groom's name], son of Mrs [Groom's mother's name] and Mr [Groom's father's name] of [their city]. The wedding is on [date] in [city]. Please keep the date for us. The invitation, with each function and venue, will follow once the details are settled. Warm regards, [Your name] and family

For a son's wedding, write "Our son [Groom's name] is to marry [Bride's name], daughter of Mrs [Bride's mother's name] and Mr [Bride's father's name] of [their city]."

What should the couple send to friends and colleagues? (doston ke liye)

The couple send friends a short save-the-date in their own voice, before someone else takes the weekend: in a winter of back-to-back weddings, friends book leave and trips early.

10. From the couple to a friend (English)
Hi [Name], Before the group chat finds out: [Partner's name] and I have a date. [Dates], [city]. Please keep that weekend clear: no work trips, no other weddings. The invitation with all the details comes later. [Your name]
11. From the bride or groom to a close friend (Hinglish)
[Naam], date fix ho gayi! Sangeet ki practice ka schedule baad mein aayega, aur usse bachne ka koi raasta nahi hai. Invitation jaldi bhejungi.

A groom writes bata raha hoon and bhejunga.

Colleagues need a short English message: the wedding date, the days you will be on leave, and the one function they are invited to, usually the reception.

12. To the team at work (English)
Hi all, A heads-up before my leave request goes in: I am getting married on [wedding date] in [city]. I will be away from [first day of leave] to [last day of leave]. The invitation, with the reception details, will follow closer to the time. Do keep the evening of [reception date] free if you can. [Your name]

Tell your manager or a client in person first.

What should relatives abroad or in other cities be told? (with IST)

Relatives abroad should hear the date by phone as soon as it is fixed, then in writing, with the ceremony time, once fixed, in IST and in their own time: a 7 pm muhurat in India in December is 1:30 pm in London and 8:30 am in New York.

Work the gap out for the wedding date, not today's, because British and American clocks change during the wedding season. Our IST table for London, New York, Dubai and Sydney gives the dates the clocks change and does the sums.

13. To a relative abroad, with the time in IST (Hinglish)
[Mausi ji / Chacha ji], namaste! [Naam] ki shaadi pakki ho gayi hai. Tareekh: [date], [shahar] Phere ka muhurat: [time] IST, yaani aapke yahan [wahan ka time aur din] Abhi se bata rahe hain taaki aap chhutti le sakein aur tickets time par book kar sakein. Saath mein kisi ko visa chahiye ho toh woh bhi abhi se dekh lijiyega. Poora card aur programme baad mein bhejenge. Aap sab aayenge tabhi ghar ki shaadi poori lagegi.

Leave the muhurat line out if the time is not fixed yet. Send it in their morning, not in the middle of their night.

For relatives coming by train, add the day booking opens, counted from their day of travel.

14. To a relative coming by train (Hindi)

The 60 days do not count the day of the journey, as the Ministry of Railways notice says; the same notice says a few daytime trains, such as the Taj Express and Gomti Express, keep a shorter window. Leave out the stay line if guests are arranging their own.

What does a destination wedding save-the-date need? (travel and stay)

A destination wedding save-the-date must answer the guest's first two questions, how to get there and where to stay: the place and state, the nearest airport and railway station, the time by road, and whether you are arranging rooms. Asking for a rough headcount is fair here, because rooms are held in advance.

15. Destination wedding, with travel and stay (English)
Save the date [Groom's name] and [Bride's name] [Date] to [date] · [Place], [State] We would love you there for all [two] days. Getting there: the nearest airport is [airport], about [hours] by road. The nearest railway station is [station]. Staying: we are keeping rooms for family and friends at [hotel or area] for the nights of [date] and [date]. If you think you can come, tell us roughly how many of you, so we know how many rooms to hold. The invitation, with every function and the travel plan, follows later. [Your names]
16. Destination wedding, to relatives (Hindi)

The invitation can then carry the full travel plan, like the airport, train, road and weather notes in our Nikhil and Mallika sample, a hill wedding above Mussoorie.

Can a save-the-date be one line, or funny?

Yes to both: a one-liner suits people who already know a wedding is coming, such as cousins who were at the roka, and a light one suits friends, as long as the joke is on the couple, never on a guest, the other family or anyone's looks. If you would not want an elder reading it over your shoulder, send a plain one.

17. One line (English)
Save the date: [Name] and [Name], [dates], [city]. Invitation to follow.
18. One line (Hindi)
19. Light, for cousins and friends (Hinglish)
Chai ke kai daur ke baad dono pariwaron ki haan ho gayi hai! [Naam] aur [naam] ki shaadi: [date], [shahar]. Calendar pe gol ghera laga lo aur apne dance moves dhool jhaad ke nikaal lo. Card baad mein aayega, bahana tab bhi nahi chalega.
20. Light, for friends (English)
Calendar update: [Name] and [Name] are getting married on [date] in [city]. Both families have agreed on everything except the menu, and that discussion may run till the wedding. Invitation to follow. Please do not book anything else that week, not even your own Goa trip.

A typed message does the job for most families; send any other format with a typed line beside it, so the date stays in the chat in words.

  • A picture: a designed card with the names and date, for the family group.
  • A short video: for the family group and friends, but a bigger download. Our guide to wedding invitation websites compares how each format behaves on a guest's phone.
  • A link: the sagai invitation that carries the wedding date, or the wedding invitation itself once every detail is final (wording 21).

Send it one by one to elders and close family, by broadcast list to the rest, and to family groups last (how each way lands on a guest's phone).

Our Bespoke package adds a save-the-date and an invitation film to the invitation link; with Shagun or Parivar you send a typed one like these (what each package includes).

Rohan and Mahi's roka carries the wedding day on its card, Nikhil and Mallika's hill wedding has a travel section, and Kartik and Naina's shows a full five-function invitation. The names are made up; every design is in all our samples.

If every venue and time is fixed, the invitation link itself can go out as the save-the-date: guests get the dates, maps and calendar buttons at once, and if something changes, the same link is updated. Our shaadi e-invites show one link carrying every function.

21. With the invitation link, when it is ready early (English)
Save the date, and everything else too [Name] and [Name] are getting married on [date] in [city], and our invitation is ready early: [link] Tap "Add to calendar" under each function to save it in your phone's calendar. If anything changes, the same link will show the new details, and we will message you as well. [Your name]

Use this only when nothing is likely to change. Drop the calendar line if your invitation has no "Add to calendar" button.

How do you announce the wedding date at the sagai or roka?

When the wedding date is fixed by the sagai or roka, announce it twice: as a line on the sagai invitation, and in a short message that evening for those who could not come. Our Rohan and Mahi sample, a roka in New Delhi, puts this at the foot of its card: "Save the date: the shaadi is on Basant Panchami. Keep something yellow ironed."

22. After the roka, to the family (Hinglish)
Roka ho gaya, aur shaadi ki tareekh bhi pakki! [Naam] aur [naam] ki shaadi [date] ko [shahar] mein hai. Jo aaj aaye, unka dil se shukriya. Jo nahi aa paaye, unke liye photos jaldi bhejenge. Card baad mein aayega, abhi bas yeh date yaad rakhiye. [Dono pariwaron ke naam]
23. A line for the sagai invitation itself (Hindi)

This goes at the foot of the sagai or roka card, as in the Rohan and Mahi sample.

Our sagai e-invites put the ring ceremony, both families and the wedding date on one link.

What do you send if the wedding date changes or is postponed?

If the date moves after the save-the-date has gone out, call anyone who may have booked trains, flights or leave, then message everyone who got the first one with the old and new dates written out. No new date yet? Say the wedding is postponed; the notes under the wordings show how. You owe guests no reason.

After a death in the family, many families send only the new date, with nothing cheerful. If an invitation link has gone out, have it updated and still send the message: guests may not reopen it.

24. Change of date, to relatives (Hindi)

No new date yet? Replace the line about the change and the two date lines with: [वर का नाम] और [वधू का नाम] का विवाह, जो [पुराना दिनांक] को होना था, फ़िलहाल आगे बढ़ा दिया गया है। नई तिथि तय होते ही सबसे पहले आपको बताएँगे।

25. Change of date, to friends (English)
Change of date [Name] and [Name]'s wedding has moved from [old date] to [new date]. It is still in [city]. If you have already booked travel or taken leave for the old date, call or message us and we will help sort it out. Please update your calendar. The invitation will carry the new date. Sorry for the bother, and thank you for keeping the first one free. [Your name]

No new date yet? Write: "[Name] and [Name]'s wedding on [old date] has been postponed. We will tell you the new date as soon as it is fixed."

What comes after the save-the-date?

After the save-the-date comes the invitation, and it must reach everyone who got the first message.

  1. Start the invitation list from the save-the-date list. How to make a wedding invitation online takes it from there, and our wedding invitation checklist makes sure nothing is left off the card.
  2. Open the invitation message by pointing back, for example "As we told you in [month]".
  3. Ask for replies on the invitation, even from guests who already said yes (RSVP wording, function by function).
  4. Give guests who travel the pickup and stay details you promised.

The invitation wording itself is in wedding invitation messages for WhatsApp. For the link, all our samples open the way a guest sees them, and you can send us your wedding details in five questions.

Sadar Nimantran (sadarnimantran.in) is a studio that makes animated invitation websites for North Indian family functions; apart from the save-the-date and film in its Bespoke package, it does not make picture, PDF or video invitations, and it does not print cards.

Questions people ask

Can we post our save-the-date on Instagram or WhatsApp status?

Only if everyone who can see it is on your guest list, and only after each of them has had their own call or message. A status or an Instagram post reaches colleagues, neighbours and distant relatives who may not be invited, and they will expect a card. Elders can also be hurt to learn the date from a status before you have rung them.

Is a save-the-date necessary for an Indian wedding?

Not always. For a wedding in your own city where every guest lives nearby, a phone call to close family and a timely invitation are enough. A save-the-date earns its place when guests must take leave, book trains or flights, or come from abroad, or when your date may clash with other weddings in the family.

Who should send the save-the-date, the parents or the couple?

In many North Indian families the parents send it to elders, relatives and family friends, and the couple send it to their own friends and colleagues. Elders usually hear first by phone. What matters is that each guest hears from the person they know, in the language they use with that person.

Should a save-the-date include the venue?

Only the city, unless the venue is booked and will not change. For a destination wedding, name the place and the nearest airport or station, because guests plan their travel around it. Function venues and timings belong on the invitation, which goes out once every detail is final.

Can I send a save-the-date on WhatsApp instead of a card?

Yes. A typed WhatsApp message, sent to each guest with their name in the first line, does what a printed save-the-date does and costs nothing. Call elders first, so the message reminds them of the call, and send the full invitation later as a card, a link or both.

What should we say if the wedding date changes after the save-the-date?

Message everyone who got the first one. If the new date is fixed, write the old and the new date out in full; if it is not, say the wedding is postponed and that you will share the new date once it is fixed. Call anyone who may have booked trains, flights or leave before you send it. You need not give a reason.
