A Hindi wedding card is usually drafted by a parent, an uncle or an elder brother or sister, a month or two before the wedding. The sections below set out the order a North Indian Hindi card follows, give the words for each part, and then give 12 complete templates: four for the groom's side, four for the bride's side, two bilingual, one in English and one full function schedule.

Every template is plain text with a Copy button, so you can paste it into a message to your printer or into an e-invite. There is no PDF or image to download. Customs differ between families, regions and communities, so treat the order below as the common form; where your family has its own way, an older card from a cousin's wedding is the best guide.

What is written on a Hindi shadi card?

A Hindi shadi card is written in a fixed order, top to bottom: the invocation, the invitation, the couple and their parents, the functions, the venue, the family's names, the children's line, and finally the request to come with phone numbers. Most printed cards in North India keep to this order, so guests know where to look for the date and the address.

What do you write at the top of a shadi card? (shadi card ke upar kya likhe)

The top of a Hindi wedding card carries the मंगलाचरण, a short invocation, and most Hindu families print ॥ because by tradition Ganesh ji is worshipped before any auspicious work begins. Many cards add a shloka under it, and some name the family's kuldevi or kuldevta (the deity a family has worshipped for generations).

Ik Onkar Satgur Prasad, sometimes with Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki FatehSikh families, on cards for the Anand Karaj

Sikh Anand Karaj cards and Muslim nikah cards follow their own forms beyond the first line: a nikah card usually opens with the Bismillah, which some families print in Arabic script or as 786. An elder in your family who has arranged one is a better guide than a Hindu card template. To see how they read on an invitation link, open the samples for Gurnoor and Simar's Anand Karaj in Amritsar and Arsalan and Inaya's nikah in Lucknow.

Wedding card matter in Hindi for son

The groom's family's card announces that their son's wedding has been fixed and invites guests to the functions at home and to join the baraat. The son's name comes first with चि. (chiranjeev) before it, and the bride follows with सौ. (saubhagyakankshini) and her parents' names and town in brackets.

The four templates below run from the most formal to the shortest. Under each Hindi version is the same text in Roman script, for anyone who types Hindi in English letters.

Wedding card matter in Hindi for daughter

The bride's family's card differs from the groom's in three places. The daughter's name comes first with सौ.कां., and the groom follows with चि. and his parents' names and town. The wedding is often called पाणिग्रहण संस्कार (the rite of taking the bride's hand), and many families mention कन्यादान (the giving of the daughter in marriage), though some prefer to leave that word off.

The third difference is the baraat. On the bride's side it is welcomed, not sent off, so the card gives the time of बारात आगमन (arrival) or स्वागत (welcome) instead of बारात प्रस्थान. Because the bride's family traditionally hosts the phere and the dinner, those timings sit on her family's card.

Can a Hindi wedding card be bilingual? (Hindi-English and English wording)

A Hindi wedding card can carry English too, and a bilingual card helps when the two families speak different languages at home, when guests come from other states, and when office colleagues or relatives abroad will read it. The two common layouts are a Hindi paragraph followed by its English version, or a card where each heading appears in both languages.

The function schedule lists each ceremony on its own line with the day, the date and the time, usually under the heading मांगलिक कार्यक्रम or शुभ कार्यक्रम. The names below are the ones most North Indian Hindu cards use; which functions you hold, and when, depends on your family and region.

Who signs the card?

The names at the foot of a Hindi wedding card sit under set headings, and each heading holds a different part of the family. Families and regions use the headings a little differently, so an older card from your own family is the safest guide. On many cards the split looks like this:

  • विनीत (humbly): the people formally inviting, usually the parents, or the head of the family such as the grandfather.
  • दर्शनाभिलाषी (eager to see you): the wider family who look forward to meeting the guest, often uncles and aunts; some families list the parents here too.
  • स्वागतोत्सुक (eager to welcome you): those who will receive guests at the door, often brothers, cousins, nephews and close friends.
  • शुभाशीर्वाद (with the blessings of): grandparents and elders, living or late.
  • बाल मनुहार (the children's request): one line in a child's voice, signed with the youngest children's pet names.

In a joint family, list the brothers' families eldest first and keep each heading to the names that fit without crowding. When a parent has passed away, many families print स्व. before the name under शुभाशीर्वाद, and the living parent or the eldest uncle signs as विनीत. For a full table of these terms, see what विनीत and दर्शनाभिलाषी mean on a wedding card.

Two bal manuhar lines, from the children of the family, Hindi

Swap चाचू or बुआ for मामा, मौसी, भैया or दीदी to match who is getting married.

Mere chachu ki shaadi hai. Laddoo maine ginkar rakhe hain, aapke hisse ke bhi. Jaldi-jaldi aana. [bachchon ke naam] Bua ki shaadi mein sabse aage nachne ki jagah maine aapke liye rok rakhi hai. Aana zaroor. [bachchon ke naam]

Which mistakes should you check for before printing?

Most errors on a Hindi wedding card are in names, dates and addresses, not in the wording, and an elder reading the proof aloud catches most of them. Check the proof in this order before it goes to the printer or onto an e-invite.

  1. Read every name aloud to someone from that family. Hindi spellings vary (महेंद्र and महेन्द्र, राठौड़ and राठौर), and families notice when theirs is written another way.
  2. Put the weekday next to every date and check it on a calendar: शुक्रवार, 19 फ़रवरी 2027 is harder to get wrong than 19/2/27.
  3. Add a landmark to every address, such as a temple, a school or a market, for guests coming from out of town.
  4. Cut each name list to what fits without crowding. A heading with fifteen names in small type is hard for elders to read.
  5. Use one kind of numeral and one way of writing time across the card: 1, 2, 3 or १, २, ३, and सायं 7 बजे in every line, not 7 PM in one and सायं in the next.
  6. Give the printer the matter as typed text, not a photo of handwriting, and ask an elder who has read many cards to check the final proof.

The same Hindi matter works on a printed card and on an invitation link, and the words do not need to change. What changes is what the guest can do with them: on a link, each function can open a map, and the guest can reply from the card itself.

A printed card still wins in some places. Many families offer the first card at the temple and hand cards to close elders in person, and a card in the hand suits anyone who does not use a smartphone. A link wins for relatives in other cities, for guests who need the map, and for keeping count of replies. You can do both: a small print run for those who should get a card by hand, and a link for everyone else. For how far ahead each should go out, see when to send wedding invitations.

The live sample Kartik weds Naina shows card matter on a link. It opens with ॥ and the वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय shloka, and the invitation reads 'हमारे सुपुत्र चि. नैना के संग होना निश्चित हुआ है', the line a printed card would carry. Open the copy made for the Sharma Parivar and the cover greets them by name where a printed card would say सपरिवार. The names in the samples are made up.

Sadar Nimantran (sadarnimantran.in), the studio behind this guide, makes invitation links like these for North Indian families. It does not print cards and does not sell PDFs or video files, but it can match the colours and wording of a printed card you already have, from a photo. Parivar covers a full shaadi with every function and both Hindi and English for ₹1,999 (list ₹3,999), and Shagun covers up to 3 functions for ₹499 (list ₹999); both are a limited-time launch offer, listed on our packages page. More designs are on the WhatsApp wedding invitation card page, and if you would rather read the steps in Hindi, see

What WhatsApp message should go with the card?

A WhatsApp message sent with the card tells the guest who is inviting them and to what, and three lines are enough. The WhatsApp wedding invitation messages guide has the full set, for relatives, friends, colleagues and reminders.

Questions people ask

A Hindi wedding card carries an invocation such as श्री गणेशाय नमः, a line inviting the guest and their family, the couple's names with their parents and town, each function with its day, date and time, the venue and home address, the family's names under विनीत and दर्शनाभिलाषी, a line from the children, and a phone number to call.

Most Hindu families print ॥ at the top, often with the वक्रतुण्ड महाकाय shloka under it, and some add the name of their kuldevi or kuldevta. Jain families often use the Namokar mantra, Sikh families ੴ, and nikah cards the Bismillah. Many families print the words rather than a picture of a deity.

How is the groom-side card different from the bride-side card?

Each family puts its own child first. The groom's side writes हमारे सुपुत्र चि. and gives the time the baraat leaves. The bride's side writes कां., often calls the wedding पाणिग्रहण संस्कार, and gives the time the baraat arrives and is welcomed. The phere and dinner timings usually sit on the bride's side card, since her family traditionally hosts them.

The family sending the card writes its own child's name first: the son's on the groom's card, the daughter's on the bride's. Put चि. before the groom's name and सौ.कां. before the bride's, with the other side's parents and town in brackets after their child. Many cards write a couple as श्रीमती and then श्री, and list relatives eldest first.

Can a Hindi wedding card be bilingual, Hindi and English?

Yes. A bilingual card helps when the two families speak different languages, when guests come from other states, and for colleagues and relatives abroad. Put the Hindi first and the English under it, or print each heading in both languages. Keep the names, dates and times the same in both versions so nobody reads two different times.

Can I use this wording on an e-invite or on WhatsApp?

Yes. The same Hindi matter works on an e-invite or an invitation link, because the words do not depend on paper. On a link you can replace the printed सपरिवार with each guest's own name, give every function its own map, and let guests reply on WhatsApp. Keep the WhatsApp message itself short and send the card or link with it.

Is it okay to send the Hindi card to elders on WhatsApp, or should we still print a few?

You can do both. A printed card handed over in person still suits grandparents, close elders and anyone who does not use a smartphone, and many families offer the first card at the temple. Relatives in other cities can get the card or a link on WhatsApp, followed by a phone call to any elder you would normally visit.
