In short

A Punjabi wedding card has six parts, in order: an invocation, a greeting, the couple and their parents, the main ceremony, the other functions, and the hosts' names with a phone number. A Sikh card opens with ੴ, writes the parents as S. and Sdn., and gives the laavan time and Guru ka langar; a Punjabi Hindu card opens with श्री गणेशाय नमः and names the phere.

What goes on a Punjabi wedding card?

A Punjabi wedding card follows the same order whether it is Sikh or Punjabi Hindu: an invocation, a greeting, the couple and their parents, the main ceremony, the other functions, the family's names and a phone number. Only the words change.

Punjabi cards printed in Hindi often sign off with विनीत, दर्शनाभिलाषी and स्वागतोत्सुक; what each means and whose names go under it is in our guide to विनीत, दर्शनाभिलाषी, चि. and सौ.कां..

What is written at the top of a Sikh wedding card? (ੴ and a Gurbani line)

A Sikh wedding card usually opens with ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ (Ik Onkar Satgur Prasad: the One Creator; by the grace of the true Guru), the line that opens many hymns in Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji. Under it some families add the Fateh, some a line of Gurbani about marriage, and some the Khanda (☬), the emblem of the Sikh faith.

The Fateh is the greeting the SGPC's Sikh Rehat Maryada asks Sikhs to use with each other. One verse families print is a shalok of Guru Amar Das ji on Ang 788 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, which says husband and wife are not those who merely sit together, but those who are one light in two bodies:

  • Gurmukhi: ਧਨ ਪਿਰੁ ਏਹਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਬਹਨਿ ਇਕਠੇ ਹੋਇ ॥ ਏਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਧਨ ਪਿਰੁ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
  • Devanagari, for a Hindi card: धन पिरु एहि न आखीअनि बहनि इकठे होइ ॥ एक जोति दुइ मूरती धन पिरु कहीऐ सोइ ॥३॥
  • Read as: Dhan pir ehi na aakhian bahan ikathe hoe. Ek jot dui moorti dhan pir kahiai soe.

Kaka, Bibi, S. and Sdn.: how are names written on a Punjabi card?

On a Sikh card the groom is written with Singh and the bride with Kaur, the names the Rehat Maryada gives every Sikh boy and girl, and their parents with S. (Sardar) and Sdn. (Sardarni). Many cards also put Kaka before the groom's name and Bibi before the bride's, a common choice rather than a rule.

  • Kaka (ਕਾਕਾ): a Punjabi word for a son or a young boy, used with affection (Wiktionary).
  • Bibi (ਬੀਬੀ): a respectful word for a lady, also used for a daughter or sister (Wiktionary).
  • S. and Sdn.: for parents and grandparents, as in S. Harjinder Singh Sandhu & Sdn. Manpreet Kaur Sandhu on our Amritsar sample. In Gurmukhi, ਸ. or ਸ੍ਰ. and ਸਰਦਾਰਨੀ.
  • Late: Late S. in English, स्व. सरदार in Hindi, ਸਵਰਗੀ ਸ. in Gurmukhi.
  • Son of, daughter of: ਸਪੁੱਤਰ and ਸਪੁੱਤਰੀ in Gurmukhi, सुपुत्र and सुपुत्री in Hindi.
  • Nanka parivar and Behan-Jija: a Punjabi card can also list the mother's side (the nanke) and a married sister and her husband under their own headings, as the same sample does with the Dhillon family of Tarn Taran.

Punjabi Hindu families usually write चि. and सौ.कां. instead. Whichever form you use, agree it with the other family so the two cards match.

How do you word the Anand Karaj on the card? (laavan, langar and milni)

On a Sikh card the main line says the Anand Karaj will take place in the presence of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji, gives the time of the laavan, and says Guru ka langar follows.

The laavan are the four verses of Guru Ram Das ji's hymn in Raag Suhi on Ang 773 and 774; after each is read, the couple walk round Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji while that laav is sung. The Sikh Rehat Maryada (Article XVIII, Anand Sanskar, checked on 4 October 2026) sets out the rest of the ceremony. Four points change the card:

  • A time, not a muhurat. The Rehat Maryada calls consulting horoscopes to fix the wedding day a sacrilege, so write the kirtan and laavan times, not a shubh muhurat line.
  • A gurdwara as the venue. On 16 October 2023 the Akal Takht banned carrying the saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib to destination weddings at resorts and beaches; a 1998 hukamnama had already barred taking it to hotels, banquet halls, clubs and marriage palaces (The Tribune). A palace or hotel can hold the reception, not the laavan.
  • The milni time. The Rehat Maryada asks the two sides to greet each other with hymns and the Fateh, which many families do as the milni where the baraat is received. Put its time on the card so the elders are there.
  • The sehra. The Rehat Maryada lists floral or gilded face ornaments, which is what a sehra is, among sacrileges; many families still hold a sehra bandi, others leave it out.

What should the foot note say? (head covered, shoes at the joda ghar)

The foot note of an Anand Karaj card asks guests to cover their heads and leave their shoes at the joda ghar (also spelt jora ghar), the shoe room at the gurdwara door. It matters most for guests who have never been to a gurdwara.

Both come from the Rehat Maryada (Article V), which also bars tobacco and other intoxicants inside and lets anyone of any religion enter. The Sikh Coalition's guide to visiting a gurdwara (April 2025) asks every visitor to cover their head, not with a hat, and says most gurdwaras keep spares. Copy the line in your card's language:

  • English: At the Gurdwara Sahib, please cover your head and leave your shoes at the joda ghar.

Sikh wedding invitation wording in Gurmukhi, Hindi and English

Here are four Anand Karaj cards to copy: two in Gurmukhi, for families whose elders read Punjabi first, and one each in Hindi and English, all with ੴ at the top. The Hindi follows Gurnoor and Simar's Anand Karaj invitation.

Punjabi Hindu wedding card matter (Ganesh ji and phere)

A Punjabi Hindu card opens with ॥ and names the phere at the muhurat the pandit ji gives, like any North Indian Hindu card. What makes it Punjabi is the rest of the day: the chooda in the morning, the milni when the baraat arrives, and the doli at the end. For more son's and daughter's templates, see shadi card matter in Hindi.

5. Bride's side Punjabi Hindu card, Hindi

Punjabi wedding invitation messages for WhatsApp

The WhatsApp message goes above the card or the invitation link and says who is inviting whom, to what, and when. Many Punjabi families type it in Punjabi in English letters, so three of the six below are written that way. For messages by relation in Hindi and English, see our WhatsApp wedding invitation messages; for asking how many are coming, see wedding RSVP wording.

7. Short WhatsApp invitation, Gurmukhi

Pairi pauna is the Punjabi greeting to an elder, as if touching their feet. For an elder, the call or visit comes first and the message after. Our guide to sending wedding invitations on WhatsApp covers elders who find phones hard.

11. Reminder the day before the Anand Karaj, Punjabi in English letters
Sat Sri Akal ji, Kal savere [time] vaje Gurdwara [naam] Sahib de gate te milni hovegi, te [time] vaje [laade da naam] te [laadi da naam] diyan laavan ne. Sir dhakan layi rumal ya chunni naal lai aana ji, te jode joda ghar vich utaarne ne. Location: [link] Laavan ton baad Guru ka langar.

Most gurdwaras keep spares at the door. - Shoes come off at the joda ghar, and please carry no alcohol or tobacco inside. - Everyone sits on the floor in the darbar hall, so wear something comfortable. - Langar follows, and you are most welcome to it. The invitation, with the map: [link] [Your name]

Wording for each function: roka, maiyan, mehndi, jaggo, chooda, baraat and reception

Give each function its own line or message, because each has its own hosts and guests. The table sums up the common ones, from Wikipedia's article on Punjabi wedding traditions and Kristina Myrvold's Wedding Ceremonies in Punjab (Journal of Punjab Studies, 2004), both checked on 4 October 2026; which are held, and when, varies by family and region.

How do you invite guests to the first Lohri after the wedding? (pehli Lohri)

Invite guests to a couple's first Lohri with a short message giving the date, the time the fire is lit and the address. Wikipedia's Lohri article (checked on 4 October 2026) notes that Lohri is celebrated with more excitement in homes that have recently had a marriage or a birth.

20. First Lohri of the new couple, Punjabi in English letters
Lohri diyan lakh lakh vadhaiyan! Sat Sri Akal ji, Saade puttar [puttar da naam] te nooh [nooh da naam] di viah ton baad pehli Lohri hai. [Date] nu shaam [time] vaje [jagah] te Lohri baalange. Rewri, moongphali te gajak di zimmevaari saadi, boliyan te bhangre di tuhadi. Parivar samet zaroor aana ji. [naam] parivar

Keep the pair matched: diyan with vadhaiyan, or di with vadhai. For a baby's first Lohri, replace the first sentence of the third line with Saade ghar [bachche da naam] di pehli Lohri hai.

Our Lohri e-invites open when the guest feeds the bonfire, and give the fire, dhol and dinner each its own time.

On an invitation link, the same card matter becomes a page the guest opens from WhatsApp with every function's time, a map and a reply button. Our sample for Gurnoor and Simar's Anand Karaj in Amritsar opens when the guest lifts a phulkari parda. It keeps ੴ in Gurmukhi above Hindi and English text that guests switch between, and gives six functions, from the chunni to the reception, their own date, time and map.

Two Punjabi samples to open the way a guest would: Gurnoor and Simar's Anand Karaj in Amritsar, and Heer's first Lohri in Ludhiana, a baby girl's Lohri whose design also suits a couple's first. The names are made up; every design is in all our samples.

We also make cards in other languages, such as Punjabi: say so when you write to us. For a full shaadi, see our wedding e-invites and what each package includes; for more ways to make a card your own, see Indian wedding invitation ideas.

Sadar Nimantran (sadarnimantran.in) is a studio that makes animated invitation websites for North Indian family functions, Punjabi weddings and Lohri among them; it does not print cards. To start, answer five short questions and WhatsApp opens with your answers written out.

Questions people ask

What is written on a Sikh wedding card?

A Sikh wedding card opens with ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ and often the Fateh, sometimes with a Gurbani line. It then invites the guest to the Anand Karaj of the couple, named with Singh and Kaur, and names their parents with S. and Sdn. It gives the gurdwara, the milni and laavan times, says Guru ka langar follows, and ends with the family's names, a phone number and a note to cover the head.

Should we print a Gurbani line on the wedding card?

It is the family's choice. Some families print only ੴ and the Fateh, because paper cards are often thrown away after the wedding; others add a line such as the shalok on Ang 788. If you print one, copy it from a Gurbani source with its Ang, and ask your granthi ji to read the proof before it goes to the printer.

Sat Sri Akal or Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa: which greeting goes on the card?

Both appear on Punjabi cards. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh is the greeting the Sikh Rehat Maryada asks Sikhs to use with each other, and the two families greet each other with it at the wedding, so it suits a formal card, under ੴ. Sat Sri Akal ji is the everyday Punjabi greeting, and suits a WhatsApp message or a less formal card.

How is a Punjabi Hindu wedding card different from a Sikh one?

A Punjabi Hindu card opens with श्री गणेशाय नमः, often writes the couple as Chi. and Sau.Kan., and gives the phere at the pandit ji's muhurat. A Sikh card opens with ੴ, names the Anand Karaj and laavan before Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji, and gives a clock time instead of a muhurat. Chunni, mehndi, jaggo, chooda and milni appear on both.

Can the Anand Karaj be held at a resort, hotel or banquet hall?

The Akal Takht says no. A 1998 hukamnama barred taking the saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji to hotels, banquet halls, clubs and marriage palaces for an Anand Karaj, and in October 2023 the Takht extended this to destination weddings at resorts and beaches. So the card names a gurdwara for the laavan, and gives the palace, hotel or resort separately for the reception.

Do guests have to cover their heads at an Anand Karaj?

Yes. Everyone covers their head inside the gurdwara, Sikh or not, with a turban, dupatta, scarf or rumal; a cap or hat is not suitable, and many gurdwaras keep spare rumals at the door. Shoes are left at the joda ghar, and no one should carry tobacco or alcohol inside. A one-line foot note on the card helps guests who have not been before.

Can our invitation be in Punjabi, in Gurmukhi?

Ask us when you write. Our Anand Karaj sample is in Hindi and English with a switch between the two, and keeps ੴ in Gurmukhi at the top. We also make cards in other languages, such as Punjabi: say so when you write to us, and send the Gurmukhi wording your family has chosen. Someone in the family who reads Gurmukhi should check the names and any Gurbani line.
