How to Send Wedding Invitations on WhatsApp: 6 Steps, Etiquette and a Link Relatives Trust
Who to call before you send, six steps for inviting a long guest list from one phone, and how to make sure relatives trust your invitation link.

In short
To send wedding invitations on WhatsApp, call or visit the closest elders first, then send every other guest a personal message from your saved number, with their name in the first line and the invitation link on its own line. Send one by one or by broadcast list, post in family groups last, and test the link and its preview on your own phone first.

Sending a wedding invitation on WhatsApp takes more than pasting one link into 300 chats. The order matters (who hears first, and by call or visit), the message has to read as personal, and after two wedding seasons of fake wedding-card scams, relatives need to know the link really comes from you. This guide covers all three, for the parent, sibling or cousin who has been handed the guest list.
Is it okay to send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp?
Yes, a wedding invitation on WhatsApp is accepted for most guests, as long as the message is personal: the guest's name, a line in your own words, and a call to the people who would expect one. What reads as careless is a forwarded card dropped into a group, not WhatsApp itself.
WhatsApp is where relatives already are. TechCrunch reported on 14 December 2025 that more than 500 million people use it in India, and that Sensor Tower data showed 94% of its Indian monthly users opening the app every day in November 2025.
The exceptions are the people closest to the family. Grandparents, the mama (the mother's brother), the bua (the father's sister), the mausi (the mother's sister) and the eldest relatives on both sides usually expect a call or a visit first. Send them the link too, after you have spoken. Whether a nani can open an invitation link at all is a question our FAQ answers.
A printed card is still the better choice for elders without a smartphone and for the first cards to the family deities. Sadar Nimantran (sadarnimantran.in) makes invitation links and does not print cards, so those come from your local printer.
Who should get the first invitation? (shadi ka pehla card kisko dena chahiye)
By custom in many North Indian Hindu families, the first wedding card goes to Ganesh ji, then to the kuldevta (the family deity) and the pitru (the ancestors), and the first card for a living relative goes to the mama. Customs differ from family to family, so follow what your own elders say.
Amar Ujala (May 2025) lists the order many families follow: Ganesh ji, then Vishnu and Lakshmi, Hanuman ji, the kuldevta or kuldevi and the pitru, with the mama first among relatives, often taken by the mother herself to her brother's house. Zee News explains why Ganesh ji comes first: he is worshipped as Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles, at the start of any auspicious work. Many families put it in one line: पहला निमंत्रण गणेश जी को, the first invitation to Ganesh ji.
Sikh, Muslim and Jain families have their own customs for the first invitation. Ask the elders at home, and let WhatsApp take over only after the first cards have gone.
The order of inviting, from devta to groups
- Offer the first card to Ganesh ji, the way your family does it.
- Place cards before the kuldevta and the pitru, if your family keeps these customs.
- Take the mama's card in person.
- Visit or call the grandparents and the eldest relatives on both sides, and tell them the link is coming.
- Send personal WhatsApp messages to every other relative and friend, one by one or by broadcast list.
- Post in family and society groups last, as a reminder for people who already have their own invitation.
How to send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp: 6 steps
Sending a wedding invitation on WhatsApp well comes down to six actions: test the link, check the preview, personalise the first line, give the link its own line, call the elders, and remind. Do them in this order for the first guest and the rest go quickly.
- Open the invitation link on your own phone over mobile data, and check every name, date, time, venue and map pin before anyone else sees it.
- Send the first message to a family member's phone, and check that the preview card shows the right picture, title and guest name.
- Start each message with the guest's name and a line in your own words, so it never reads like a forward.
- Put the link on a line of its own, as the full address starting with https://, with no full stop or emoji touching it.
- Call the elders and close relatives the same day, and stay on the line while they open it if they want help.
- Send one short reminder with the same link before the first function, and answer everyone who replies.
For 300 guests, split the list: a parent takes the elders, a sibling the cousins and friends, so every guest hears from a number they have saved.
If each guest has a personal link, copy the right one into each message. On our invitations a link such as sadarnimantran.in/invite/kartik-naina/Sharma-Parivar shows 'Sharma Parivar' on the cover and in the WhatsApp preview, and the family makes as many as it needs with a link maker. Open the Kartik and Naina sample to see what a guest sees, or read how a wedding invitation website compares with a PDF or a video.
A message to send with the link
The message with an invitation link can be short, because the invitation carries the details. More wordings, for every relative and function, are in our wedding invitation messages for WhatsApp.

Broadcast list, group or one by one: which should you use?
Send wedding invitations one by one to elders and close family, by broadcast list to friends and colleagues who have saved your number, and in groups only as a reminder. Each method lands differently on the guest's phone.
A broadcast list sends the same message to many contacts, and each person gets it as a private message from you. WhatsApp's Help Center page on broadcast lists says, as listed on 3 October 2026, that a list can hold up to 256 contacts, that you can make as many lists as you like, and that only people who have saved your number receive the message. Broadcast lists do not work on WhatsApp Web, Windows or Mac, and the same page notes that people in some countries may see a monthly broadcast limit as it rolls out.
| Method | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| One by one: copy, paste, change the name | Elders, close relatives and family friends | Slow for a long list, so share the list among family members |
| Broadcast list | Friends, cousins and colleagues who have saved your number | Up to 256 contacts a list; anyone who has not saved your number gets nothing; one text goes to all, so it cannot carry a different link for each guest |
| Family or society group | A reminder or a change of venue, after everyone has been invited | Reads as a mass message, is easy to miss in a busy group, and many elders take it as not being invited properly |
| Forwarding a message someone else wrote | Not suited to invitations | Arrives with a Forwarded label, and goes to at most five chats at a time |
To reach many contacts at once without a group, make one broadcast list per circle (office, college friends, neighbours). Replies come back to you privately, not to the whole list.
Forwarding is the weakest choice. WhatsApp's help page on forwarding says a message you forward that you did not write yourself shows a Forwarded label to whoever receives it. Copy the text and paste it fresh instead.
Will relatives trust your link? (the .apk wedding card scam)
Relatives have good reason to be careful with wedding invitations on WhatsApp: since late 2024, police in several states have warned about fake wedding cards that are really .apk files, Android apps that take over the phone once installed. A real invitation is a picture, a PDF or a web link, and it never asks to install anything.
Amar Ujala reported on 16 November 2024 that the cyber crime wing of the Himachal Pradesh CID had warned that such a file lets fraudsters send messages from the phone, steal personal data and reach bank accounts. Business Standard wrote on 27 November 2024 that police in Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana and Gujarat had issued warnings, and described a victim in Rajasthan who lost ₹4.5 lakh after opening a fake wedding card. Hyderabad's cyber crime police issued a fresh alert, reported by ETV Bharat on 25 May 2026.
The host's job is to make a real invitation easy to tell apart from a fake one. Check these before the first send:
- Send from your own saved number, so your name and photo appear on the message.
- Call or send a voice note first to elders and anyone wary of scams: 'I am sending the shaadi invitation on WhatsApp now.'
- Write their name and a line of your own. Scam messages are generic; yours names the couple, the date and the city.
- Use a full https link on a website you can name, such as the invitation studio's own domain, not a shortened link that hides where it goes.
- Check the preview shows the couple's names and, where the invitation has it, the guest's own name.
- Make sure nothing needs downloading or installing. An invitation link opens in the phone's browser. A real wedding invitation is never an .apk file.
If a relative has already installed a file that claimed to be a wedding card, the advice in the Hyderabad alert is to switch off the internet, uninstall the app, change passwords and PINs, check bank transactions, and report it at cybercrime.gov.in or on the 1930 helpline.
Why is the WhatsApp link preview not showing?
A WhatsApp link preview, the box with a picture and title above the link, is built on your phone when you paste the link, so most missing previews come from how the link was pasted. Fix the paste, then test once before you send to the whole list.
- Paste the full address, starting with https://, not a shortened or retyped version.
- Wait for the preview to appear in the typing box before you tap send. If you send too quickly, the message goes without it.
- Keep the link on its own line, with no full stop, bracket or emoji stuck to it.
- Check that previews are switched on. WhatsApp's privacy settings page lists an advanced option to disable link previews, and it may have been turned on.
- Send a test to a family member's phone and look at it there, not only on yours.
When the preview carries the guest's name, as it does on our invitations, the test also catches a wrong link: a preview that greets the Sharma Parivar in a message for the Guptas means you copied the wrong one. A link without a preview still opens, so if it will not appear, add 'Tap the link to open the invitation'.
How do you invite elders who find phones hard?
Elders who find phones hard need a call first, a message in Hindi, and someone in the family who can open the invitation with them. A link sent on its own, with nothing before it, is easy for them to miss.
- Call before you send. Say the invitation is coming on WhatsApp from your number and opens with one tap.
- Write in Hindi, or send a voice note. Twenty seconds in your own voice tells an elder the message is real and what to tap.
- Put their name on it. A link that opens with 'Nana ji and Nani ji' on the cover is plainly meant for them.
- Point out the bigger text. On our invitations the switch is called Bigger text (बड़े अक्षर), under More at the bottom of the screen.
- Ask a grandchild to sit with them and open the link, play the music and show the dates.
- Show them the map button, so the driver, or the son who brings them, can go straight to the venue.
For an elder who does not use a smartphone at all, an invitation link is the wrong tool. Give a printed card or visit, and read the dates out on the phone.
How do you invite NRI relatives, colleagues and guests not on WhatsApp?
Relatives abroad, colleagues and people without WhatsApp each need one change: the right hour and time zone, a formal tone, or a different channel for the same link.
NRI relatives
Send to relatives abroad in their morning, not yours, and write every time with IST after it. A 7:30 pm IST sangeet on 18 February 2027 is 2 pm in London, 9 am in New York and 1 am the next day in Sydney, so for close relatives add their own time in brackets.
Ask them to save each function to their calendar from the invitation. Our add-to-calendar button writes each function's time in UTC, which phone calendars normally show in the phone's own time zone; ask one relative abroad to confirm the time it shows before you send to the rest.
Colleagues
Keep colleagues' invitations formal, in English if that is how you speak at work, and name only the functions they are invited to, usually the reception. A personal message or a broadcast list for the office works better than a post in the office group.
Dear [Name],
Our [son/daughter] [Name] is getting married in [city]. We would be glad to see you at the reception on [date] at [venue].
The invitation, with the time and a map, is here:
[link]
Warm regards,
[Your name]Guests not on WhatsApp
An invitation link is an ordinary web address, so it works by SMS or email too. Send the same link by text message or email to anyone not on WhatsApp, and call the ones who use neither.
What does RSVP mean, and how do replies come back on WhatsApp?
RSVP stands for the French répondez s'il vous plaît, which means 'please reply'; in Hindi, कृपया उत्तर दें. On a wedding card it asks guests to say whether they are coming, so the family can plan seating and food, as Aaj Tak's explainer (31 January 2023) sets out.
On WhatsApp a reply is simply a message back, so ask for what you need: yes or no, how many people, and which functions. On our invitations the guest taps yes or no, picks the number and the functions, and WhatsApp opens with the reply already written and addressed to the host. The reply goes straight to the family and does not pass through us.
Give a reply-by date that leaves time for the caterer's final count. For when to send the first message, the reminder and that date, see when to send wedding invitations.
What if the venue or time changes after sending?
When a venue or time changes after the invitations have gone out, correct the invitation first and then send one short message to the guests it affects. With a link that can be updated, everyone who opens the same link sees the new details; with a picture or a PDF, send the new file and say clearly that it replaces the old one.

[link]
Baaki sabhi karyakram pehle jaise hi hain. What mistakes should you avoid?
The mistakes that upset relatives are small ones: a Forwarded label, a wrong name, a message at midnight. A test send and a written list prevent most of them.
- Forwarding the invitation from another chat, so it arrives marked Forwarded.
- Inviting only in a big group, which many elders take as not being invited at all.
- Wrong or misspelt names, or the last guest's name left in a copied message. Read the first line before every send.
- Sending late at night or very early. Send between morning and early evening.
- No reminder. One short message before the first function, with the same link, saves many 'which hall was it?' calls.
Questions people ask
Is it rude to send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp?
No, not for most guests, if the message uses their name and your own words. It can feel rude to the closest elders, such as grandparents, the mama or the bua, if WhatsApp is how they first hear of the wedding. Call or visit them first, then send the link.
Should I use a broadcast list or a group for wedding invitations?
Use a broadcast list for friends and colleagues: each person gets your message privately and replies come only to you. Keep groups for reminders after everyone has been invited personally. A broadcast reaches only people who have saved your number.
How do I send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp to many contacts at once?
Make a broadcast list for each circle, such as office or college friends, with up to 256 contacts in each, the limit WhatsApp's Help Center gives. Write one message with the link on its own line and send. Invite elders one by one instead.
Shadi ka pehla card kisko dena chahiye?
In many North Indian Hindu families the first card goes to Ganesh ji, then to the kuldevta and the ancestors, and the first card for a living relative goes to the mama, the mother's brother. Customs differ by family and community, so ask the elders at home and follow what they say.
How can I make sure relatives don't think my invitation link is a scam?
Send it from the number they have saved, call or send a voice note first, and put their name and a personal line in the message. Use a full https link on a website you can name, and never send anything that needs installing.
What does RSVP mean on a wedding card?
RSVP is short for the French répondez s'il vous plaît, meaning please reply. On a wedding card it asks you to tell the family whether you are coming and how many of you, so they can plan seating and food. On WhatsApp, a short reply message to the host does the same job.
What if some guests are not on WhatsApp?
Send the same invitation link by SMS or email, because a web link opens in any phone browser. For elders with a basic phone or none of their own, call, visit or give a printed card, and tell whoever brings them the dates.
