When to Send Wedding Invitations in India: A Timeline from Save-the-Date to Reminder
Save-the-date, main card, function invites and the last reminder: when each goes out for local, out-of-town and NRI guests, with the train booking window and print time counted in.

In short
Wedding invitations in India usually go out 4 to 6 weeks before the first function for guests in the same city, and 8 to 10 weeks before for guests who travel by train or fly in. A save-the-date goes 3 to 6 months ahead, and 6 months or more for NRI relatives. Reminders follow 7 to 10 days before, then 1 to 2 days before.

The date your pandit ji gives sets every other date in a wedding. Once the muhurat is fixed, the invitations follow a rough calendar: an early word to close family, a save-the-date, the main card, then reminders. This guide works that calendar out for guests in your own city, relatives who come by train or flight, and family abroad.
How many days before the wedding should invitations be sent?
Most families in India send the main wedding invitation 4 to 6 weeks before the first function to guests in the same city, and 8 to 10 weeks before to guests who have to travel. Relatives abroad hear the date 6 months or more ahead. The table sets out each step by where the guest lives.
| Step | Local guests | Out-of-town guests (train or flight) | NRI guests | What to include |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A phone call to close family | As soon as the muhurat is fixed | As soon as the muhurat is fixed | As soon as the muhurat is fixed, even before the venue | The date, the city, and that a card will follow |
| Save-the-date | 3 to 4 months ahead | 3 to 6 months ahead, and before train booking opens 60 days out | 6 months or more ahead | Names, dates and city, with a line that the invitation will follow |
| Main invitation | 4 to 6 weeks ahead | 8 to 10 weeks ahead | 8 to 10 weeks ahead | Every function with its date, time, venue and map, and a way to reply |
| Function-only invites (sangeet, chowki, reception) | Same day as the main invitation | Same day as the main invitation | Same day as the main invitation | Only the functions that guest is asked to, each with its own time and place |
| First reminder | 7 to 10 days before | 7 to 10 days before | 7 to 10 days before | The invitation again, and anything that has changed |
| Last reminder | 1 to 2 days before each function | Before they set out, with pickup and stay details | After they land, with the plan for each day | Time, venue, parking or pickup, and a number to call on the day |
These ranges are common practice, not rules. They follow an Indian wedding invitation timeline published in April 2026, a planner's guide updated on 25 August 2026, and a card printer's timing guide from November 2023, which asks for at least 10 weeks for guests coming from abroad. The 60-day figure is the Indian Railways booking window, covered further down.
Count back from the first function a guest will attend, not from the phere. A cousin coming for the haldi needs the haldi date; a colleague asked only to the reception needs the reception date. The planner's guide above makes the same point about working back from the earliest function.
शादी का कार्ड कितने दिन पहले देना चाहिए? (shaadi card kitne din pehle)
In short: 4 to 6 weeks before for guests in your city, 8 to 10 weeks for those who travel, and 6 months or more of notice for family abroad. The same answer is written out below in Hindi and in Hinglish, ready to paste into the family WhatsApp group.
What does 'save the date' mean? (सेव द डेट का मतलब)
A save-the-date is an early, short notice that asks guests to keep the wedding dates free, with the full invitation to follow. In Hindi it comes closest to "यह तारीख़ ख़ाली रखिए" or "तारीख़ याद रखिए": please keep this date for us.
A save-the-date carries only the names, the date or dates, the city and a line saying the invitation will follow. It needs no venues, timings or reply. The invitation, the nimantran patra, is the formal card: every function with its time, venue and map, the family names, and a way to say who is coming. Its full wording is set out in the shaadi card matter guide.
In many North Indian families the first save-the-date is still a phone call: once the date is fixed, the elders ring close relatives to say the tareekh is pakki (confirmed). A written save-the-date does the same job for the wider list, and gives travelling relatives something to plan leave and tickets around. Send one only to people you are sure to invite, because it promises that a card will follow.
When should you send a save-the-date? (and messages to copy)
Send a save-the-date 3 to 4 months before a wedding in your own city, 5 to 6 months before a destination wedding, and 6 months or more ahead when relatives must fly in from abroad, as the April 2026 timeline suggests. The wordings below are grouped by who sends them to whom. Replace the words in square brackets.

Guests coming by train: when does booking open? (the 60-day rule)
Indian Railways opens reserved train tickets 60 days before the journey, not counting the day of travel. The window was cut from 120 days to 60 from 1 November 2024, according to the Ministry of Railways release on PIB dated 17 October 2024. We found no later change when we checked in October 2026; confirm on IRCTC before you plan around it.
Out-of-town relatives should therefore know the date before that window opens, so they can book on the first day. A relative travelling on 9 December 2026 for a haldi on 10 December can book from 10 October 2026. If the invitation only reaches them in November, trains on busy routes may already be waitlisted. A save-the-date sent 3 months or more ahead avoids this, and the main invitation should still reach them 8 to 10 weeks before.
The return journey runs on its own 60-day clock, so guests book it separately and later. Tatkal tickets open only one day before the journey, not counting the day of travel (IRCTC's Tatkal guide), so a late invitation leaves travellers hoping for a Tatkal seat. Some day trains, such as the Taj Express, have a shorter window, as the PIB release notes. Guests who fly within India have no booking window, but they still need the date to arrange leave.
How early should NRI relatives be told about the wedding?
Tell relatives abroad by phone as soon as the muhurat is fixed, and send a written save-the-date at least 6 months ahead, the minimum the April 2026 timeline gives for international flights and visas. Their full invitation then goes 8 to 10 weeks before the first function, as for out-of-town guests in India.
Leave is often the real constraint. A relative abroad may need to apply for it well before booking a flight, and the winter wedding months overlap with Christmas and New Year holidays in many countries. A spouse or friend travelling on a foreign passport may also need an Indian visa: India's e-Visa site asks e-Tourist applicants to apply at least 4 days before arrival, so check early who needs one.
Write the muhurat in IST and in their own time
The gap between India and the UK or the US moves when those countries change their clocks. The UK's clocks go back on 25 October 2026 (GOV.UK) and the US clocks on 1 November 2026 (NIST), so for a December wedding a 7:30 pm muhurat in India is 2 pm in London and 9 am in New York. Work out the gap for the wedding date itself, not for today, and write both times in the message.
An add-to-calendar button saves guests the arithmetic. On the invitations we make, each function's button saves an entry with its time in UTC, so a phone in London or New York shows the function in local time. Whatever invitation you send, ask relatives abroad to check that the calendar entry shows the time you expect.
How early should you order printed wedding cards?
Order printed wedding cards about 3 to 4 weeks before you plan to hand them out, which puts the order 9 to 12 weeks before the wedding if cards are to reach guests 6 to 8 weeks ahead. That is the gap the planner's guide recommends: send printed cards 6 to 8 weeks before, ordered 3 to 4 weeks before that. To find your own order date, work backwards.
- Note the first function each group of guests will attend, such as the haldi for family and the reception for colleagues.
- Count back 8 to 10 weeks for guests who travel and 4 to 6 weeks for local guests: those are the dates cards must be in their hands.
- Subtract delivery time: the weekends you need to visit relatives in person, or the post or courier's own delivery time for cards you send.
- Subtract printing time: King of Cards lists 5 to 7 business days after proof approval, and its shipping policy says 8 to 10 days after the matter is approved in peak season, before shipping.
- Subtract time for the proof, so the elders can check every name and title before anything is printed.
- Place the order on the date you are left with, and ask for a few spare cards for names added late.
Simple flat cards can be quicker. Printo offers same-day delivery in Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, NCR and Chennai on orders placed before 4:30 pm, as listed in October 2026. Ask your own printer for their peak-season time before you count on it.
| Stage | Printed card | Invitation link |
|---|---|---|
| Design and wording | Choose a design at the shop or online, then write the matter | Choose a design, then send the names, functions and venues |
| Proof and production | 5 to 7 business days after proof approval at one online printer; 8 to 10 days in peak season | No printing. At Sadar Nimantran (sadarnimantran.in), a design from the samples is ready within 1 day of the details arriving |
| Reaching the guest | Weekends of visits, or post and courier days | Sent on WhatsApp the same day, to anyone in India or abroad |
| A change after sending | A correction slip, a reprint, or a call to each guest | The same link is updated, with one message to say so |
| Where it is the better choice | Handing it to elders in person, keeping it as a keepsake, guests without smartphones | Guests who travel, relatives abroad, late changes, maps and replies; it needs a phone and mobile data |
Neither has to replace the other. Some families print a small number of cards for elders and send a link to everyone else. The cost guide works out what each mix costs, and our wedding e-invites page shows what a link carries.
When should wedding reminders go out?
Send the first wedding reminder 7 to 10 days before the first function, and a last one 1 to 2 days before each function a guest is attending, as the April 2026 timeline suggests. Two reminders are enough for most guests; a third is only for people who need a fixed time, such as the baraatis.
| When | Who | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| 7 to 10 days before the first function | Everyone invited | The invitation again, the functions they are asked to, and any change since |
| About a week before, if no reply has come | Guests who have not replied | A personal message or a call, asking only whether they can come |
| 1 to 2 days before each function | Guests invited to that function | Its time, venue and map, with parking or pickup details |
| 1 to 2 days before the baraat sets off | The baraatis and anyone on the family bus | The departure time, the meeting point and a number to call |
Some guests should get a phone call rather than a message: elders, relatives who would expect a visit with the card, and anyone whose reply has not come. Customs differ between families, so follow what your own elders expect. For the words themselves, the wedding invitation message guide has reminder messages in Hindi, Hinglish and English, and the guide to sending wedding invitations on WhatsApp covers the etiquette.
What if the date, venue or time changes after the invitations go out?
When anything changes after the invitations are out, tell everyone once, clearly, and call the people who are travelling first. A changed date may mean guests have to rebook trains and flights, so they need to hear before anyone else.
With printed cards, a change means a correction slip, a reprint or a call to each guest. With an invitation link, the details can change on the link itself: when a family tells us, we update the same link, so everyone who already has it sees the new venue or time. Either way, send a short message saying what changed; do not count on guests reopening an invitation they have already read.
Questions people ask
How many days before the wedding should invitations be sent in India?
For guests in the same city, 4 to 6 weeks before the first function they are invited to. For guests who travel by train or flight, 8 to 10 weeks, so they can book as soon as train booking opens 60 days before the journey. Relatives abroad should know the date 6 months or more ahead, with the full invitation following about two months before.
Is 15 days before the wedding too late to send invitations?
For local friends and neighbours, 15 days is short but workable, especially with a phone call alongside the message. For anyone who has to travel it is late: train booking opened weeks earlier, and they may be left hoping for Tatkal seats, which open a day before the journey. If you are late, call the travellers first and send the invitation the same day.
When should we send the save-the-date and when the invitation?
Send the save-the-date once the muhurat and venue are fixed: 3 to 4 months ahead for a wedding in your own city, and 6 months or more for relatives abroad. The invitation follows 4 to 6 weeks before for local guests and 8 to 10 weeks before for guests who travel. Only send a save-the-date to people you are sure to invite.
How early should NRI relatives be told about the wedding?
As soon as the muhurat is fixed, by a phone call, then a written save-the-date at least 6 months ahead. They need time to apply for leave, book flights in the holiday season and, for anyone on a foreign passport, arrange a visa. Write the main function times in IST and in their local time.
When should wedding reminders go out?
Send the first reminder 7 to 10 days before the first function, to everyone invited, with the invitation again. Send a last one 1 to 2 days before each function, only to the guests invited to it, with the time and map. The baraatis may need one more message with the departure time and meeting point.
What does save the date mean in Hindi?
Save the date means "तारीख़ याद रखिए" or "यह तारीख़ ख़ाली रखिए": please keep this date free for us. It is an early note with the names, dates and city, sent months before the wedding. The full invitation, with every function, venue and time, comes later.
