Wedding Invitation Website: What It Is, How It Works, and When a Video or PDF Is Better

What an invitation link is, how each guest gets their own name on it, and how it behaves next to an image, PDF or video on a guest's phone. Plus when the older formats are the better choice.

In short

A wedding invitation website is an invitation sent as a link, usually on WhatsApp, that opens like a card in the guest's phone browser with no app to install. It carries every function's date, time, venue and map, and a form to reply. E-invites come in four formats: image, PDF, video and website. Unlike the other three, a website can be updated after sending and can collect replies.

Most families send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp as a picture of the card, a PDF or a short video. Some now send a link that opens like a card instead. Here is what that link is, how it behaves next to the formats you know, and when the older ones are the better choice.

What is a wedding invitation website?

A wedding invitation website is an invitation sent as a link that opens like a card in the guest's phone browser. The guest taps it in WhatsApp, an animated cover opens (a door, a curtain, an envelope), and inside are the family names, music, every function with its own date, time, venue and map, and a form to reply.

It is a small website made for one wedding, so nothing needs installing and nobody needs an account. Several studios and apps in India make them, and many, ours included, give each guest a personal link and a reply form: treat those as usual features, not rare ones.

What is an e-invite? (ई-निमंत्रण क्या है)

An e-invite, short for e-invitation, is an invitation sent electronically instead of printed and posted, which is how Wiktionary defines e-invitation. In Indian families it nearly always travels on WhatsApp, in one of four formats:

  • Image: a JPG of the card, the simplest to forward.
  • PDF: the card as a document, often a page for each function.
  • Video: a short film of the card with music.
  • Website: a link that opens like a card, with maps and a reply form.

Image, PDF, video or website: how does each behave on a guest's phone?

The real difference between e-invite formats shows on the guest's phone inside WhatsApp, not in a gallery of designs. The table compares what a guest gets from each; for prices, see what each format costs for a real guest list.

Three rows rest on WhatsApp's Help Center page on sending media, checked on 3 October 2026: photos and videos are usually compressed when sent, the default video size limit is 100 MB at 720p on a faster connection and 64 MB at 480p on a slower one, and a message with just one link creates a preview. Each guest also chooses what downloads automatically, so on some phones a video waits for a tap before it downloads.

A personal invitation link is the family's invitation address with one guest's name added at the end, so the card greets that guest by name. On our Kartik and Naina sample, the link for the Sharma family is sadarnimantran.in/invite/kartik-naina/Sharma-Parivar.

The WhatsApp preview then reads "Sharma Parivar, you are invited · Kartik weds Naina", the letter inside opens with "Dear Sharma Parivar", and the reply form has their name filled in. Type the name in Devanagari and the Hindi preview reads "शर्मा परिवार, आप सादर आमंत्रित हैं".

The family makes these links with a link maker: type a name, copy the link, send it, as many times as you like. One caution: if the Sharmas forward theirs, the next person also sees "Sharma Parivar" on the cover, so send the plain link, without a name, to family groups.

Open a sample the way a guest would: Kartik and Naina's shaadi in Jaipur, Gurnoor and Simar's Sikh wedding in Amritsar, and Rohan and Mahi's roka in New Delhi. The names are made up. More designs are in all our samples.

How do guests reply without an app? (RSVP on WhatsApp)

Guests reply from the invitation itself: they tap yes or no, choose how many are coming and which functions, and tap one button. WhatsApp opens with the reply written out and addressed to the host, and the guest presses send.

Here is the exact message the Kartik and Naina sample wrote on 3 October 2026, for the Sharma family coming as three people to two of the five functions:

The reply a guest sends, in English (from the Kartik and Naina sample)
Namaste! Reply for Kartik weds Naina. Name: Sharma Parivar Coming: Yes, 3 people Functions: - Jaimala & Phere - Aashirwad Samaroh

When a guest ticks every function, the list becomes one line, such as "Functions: All 5".

The same reply when the guest reads the card in Hindi, for two people
नमस्ते! न्योते का जवाब: कार्तिक संग नैना नाम: शर्मा परिवार उपस्थिति: जी हाँ, 2 सदस्य कार्यक्रम: - जयमाला व फेरे - आशीर्वाद समारोह

The form writes the reply in the language the guest is reading the card in.

The reply goes from the guest's WhatsApp to the host's and does not pass through the studio. On a sample the host number is the studio's, so try the form without sending. Each reply lands in that guest's own chat with you, so keep a list of headcounts as they come in.

A North Indian wedding is rarely one event: tilak, haldi, mehndi, sangeet, baraat, phere and reception can fall on different days at different venues. An invitation website gives each function its own section with a date, a time, a venue, a Directions button that opens Google Maps and an add-to-calendar button.

The Kartik and Naina sample has five functions over three days, from a haldi at the family home in Vaishali Nagar to the aashirwad samaroh (the reception, where guests bless the couple) at a garden on Amer Road. As images, that is five files to scroll through; as a link, it is one message.

The difference grows when something changes. If the sangeet moves, an image means a new file while the old card stays in every chat. A website is changed in place, and everyone with the link sees the new venue when they next open it. Still send a short message about a big change.

Most elders who use WhatsApp can open an invitation link: it is one tap and opens in the phone's browser with nothing to install. The reading matters more than the opening, so look for large enough text, their own language, and a page light enough for an older phone.

Every Sadar Nimantran invitation has a Bigger text switch (बड़े अक्षर on a Hindi card), and those made in both languages have a Hindi and English switch under More. Our Kartik and Naina sample, opened and scrolled to the end on a phone-sized screen on 3 October 2026, loaded about 1.4 MB; one with a photo gallery weighs more. More is in the questions on our home page.

Some elders will still want a printed card or a phone call, and that is worth honouring. A call first and the link after works well: the call carries the respect, the link holds the details.

A genuine invitation link opens a web page in the phone's browser. It never asks the guest to download or install anything, and it is never an .apk file. Police have warned about fake wedding invitations that are really Android apps: Rajasthan Police, reported by The Tribune on 25 April 2026, said a file ending in .apk is a virus and not a card, and Himachal Pradesh Police in November 2025 said genuine cards come as images or PDFs, never as APKs.

The same warnings mention phishing and shortened links, so a link is not safe just because it is a link. Check that it came from someone you know, that the address reads clearly, and that the page asks for nothing beyond a reply: no real invitation asks for an OTP or a bank detail. More is in our guide on how to send a wedding invitation on WhatsApp.

When is a video or a printed card the better choice?

An invitation website is not the right choice for every family or guest. Each other format wins somewhere:

  • A video plays offline. Once downloaded, it plays where there is no signal and forwards easily. A website needs data each time.
  • A video is a film to watch together. For music and moving photographs in the family group, it beats a page you scroll.
  • A printed card suits the ritual. Handing a card to elders is something a link cannot do. Print a small run for them and send links to everyone else.
  • A free template costs nothing. For one function at home, a well-made image does the job.
  • An image reaches the weakest connection. A small JPG arrives where a page may stall, and stays on the phone.

How do you choose? (a quick checklist)

Choose an e-invite format by the size of the function, the number of venues and where your guests live, not by which looks best in a gallery.

  1. Count the functions and venues.
  2. List the guests who live far away or abroad.
  3. Mark the elders who should get a card or a call first.
  4. Decide whether you need replies per function, for catering or rooms.
  5. Open a sample on the oldest phone in the family.

If you settle on a website, compare what each maker includes; ours is on the packages page.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between an e-invite and an e-card?

The words are used loosely. An e-card usually means one image or PDF of the card, while e-invite covers every digital format: image, PDF, video and invitation website. When someone offers an e-invite, ask which format it is.

Is a wedding invitation website worth it?

It is worth it when the wedding has several functions, guests in different cities, or details that may still change, because one link carries every time, map and reply and can be updated. For one small function at home, an image or a phone call does the job.

Do guests need to download an app to open a wedding invitation link?

No. A wedding invitation website opens in the phone's own browser when the guest taps the link in WhatsApp, with no app, login or download. A message that asks you to install something, or a file ending in .apk, is not an invitation.

Can I change the venue or time after sharing the invitation link?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to choose a link. The maker updates the same address, and everyone who has it sees the new details when they next open it. Send a short message about a big change as well.

Is it better to send a video or a link?

Send a link when guests need maps, times for several functions or a way to reply, and a video when you want a short film that plays offline and forwards easily. You can also send both: the video to the family group, the link to each guest.

Does a wedding invitation website work for guests abroad?

Yes. The link opens on any phone with internet in any country, and the reply reaches the host on WhatsApp like any other message. Our invitations show every time in Indian time, as a printed card would, so mention that to guests in other time zones.

Will our wedding invitation website show up on Google?

Customer invitations from Sadar Nimantran are hidden from Google; only our samples, which use made-up names, are meant to be found. Anyone who has the link can still open it, so a forwarded link reaches whoever receives it. Ask any maker about privacy before adding family photos.
