Our story

Two lanes apart

Anant and Gauri grew up ten minutes apart in Banaras, and met for the first time in Bengaluru.

  1. 2023

    The first hello

    A Holi party for Banarasis far from home. In ten minutes they found out they lived two lanes apart, and spent the next forty arguing about whose kachori wala is better.

  2. 2025

    Dev Deepawali

    Both families booked the same boat by mistake. By the time it reached Panchganga Ghat, the date was fixed.

  3. 2027

    Saat phere

    And now, with Maa Ganga as witness and all of you on the steps, the seven rounds.

  1. Tilak

    11 am

    Pathak Niwas, Bhelupur

    Gauri's brothers arrive with the tilak thali. Anant has been told to sit still and look humble. Lunch after.

    4 pm

    Pathak Niwas, Bhelupur

    Dholak in the courtyard, the old banna-banni geet, and the mehndi didi from Godowlia who has done every wedding in this family for thirty years.

    10 am

    Pathak Niwas, Bhelupur

    Kachori-sabzi and jalebi from eight, haldi at ten. Come for the first, stay for the second.

  1. Sangeet on the Ganga

    5:30 pm

    Budgera boat, from Assi Ghat

    The budgera leaves Assi Ghat at 5:30 sharp and drifts down to Dashashwamedh in time for the aarti. Songs from both sides, and a shehnai on board, because this is Bismillah Khan's city.

    Baraat & Phere

    7 pm

    Kinara Haveli, near Assi Ghat

    The baraat walks the last lane behind the shehnai. Jaimala at 9, dinner after, Banarasi paan at the gate, and phere on the terrace over the river at the night muhurat.

  • Holi in Bengaluru. Neither of us is recognisable.

  • Both mothers, one afternoon, forty Banarasi saris

The venue

Kinara Haveli

Near Assi Ghat, Varanasi 221005

Cars stop at the Assi crossing. From there it is a short walk down the lane, or an e-rickshaw from the family. Look for the marigolds on the gate.

Getting here

  • By air

    Lal Bahadur Shastri airport at Babatpur is about an hour from Assi. Send us your flight and a car will be waiting.

  • By train

    Varanasi Junction (Cantt) is about 30 minutes away. Tell us your train and someone will be on the platform.

  • The last lane

    The lanes to the ghat are too narrow for cars. Cars stop at the main road, and the family will send e-rickshaws for you and your bags.

  • Where to stay

    Rooms are kept at the haveli and at a guest house on the same ghat. February mornings are about 12°C, so bring a shawl, and get up early for malaiyo.
