In short

A mata ki chowki invitation in Hindi opens with जय माता दी, names the host family and the occasion if there is one, then gives the date, the time the jyot is lit, the bhajan mandali, the aarti and the bhandara or prasad, and the full address. It ends by inviting guests सपरिवार, with their families. A jagran card also says the programme runs through the night.

A mata ki chowki card is short, but it carries a programme: when the jyot (the sacred flame) is lit, who sings, when the aarti is, and when the bhandara begins. The wordings below follow that programme, for an evening chowki and for an all-night jagran, and every Devanagari wording has a Hinglish twin for people who type Hindi in English letters. Customs differ between families and mandalis, so check the order and the timings with your mandali or an elder before you print or send anything.

Chowki, jagran or bhajan sandhya: which are you hosting?

A mata ki chowki is usually an evening programme of a few hours, while a jagran, also called a jagrata, runs through the night and ends around dawn. The card should say plainly which one you are hosting, because guests plan their evening, and their sleep, around it.

Mata ki chowki, jagran, bhajan sandhya and bhandara compared: usual timing and length as many families and mandalis describe them. Your own mandali sets the actual times.
FunctionUsual timingUsual lengthWhat the card should stress
Mata ki chowkiEvening, sometimes in the dayAbout 3 to 4 hoursThe time the jyot is lit, the mandali's name, the aarti, and when the prasad or bhandara is served
Mata ka jagran (jagrata)Starts at night and ends around dawnThrough the nightThat it runs all night, the jyot time, the morning aarti, and when the bhandara is, often after the aarti
Bhajan sandhya or kirtan on its ownEveningSet by the host and the singersThe start time and the singers' names; prasad if there is any
Bhandara on its ownOften in the dayUntil the prasad is served to allThe start time, the place, and whether everyone is welcome or only invited families

A bhajan mandali's page for Delhi NCR describes a chowki as usually 3 to 4 hours in the evening, checked in October 2026. A jagran, or jagarana, is an all-night vigil of bhajans, aarti and stories of the deity, as Wikipedia's entry on jagarana sets out. Neither follows a single rulebook: the jyot time, the order and the length come from your mandali and your family's custom.

(what to write, in card order)

A mata ki chowki card runs from the Goddess's name at the top to the family's name at the foot, with the programme in between. Put the parts in this order and the card reads the way a printed one does.

  1. Open with ॥ , and add ॥ or a verse to the Goddess above it if your family prints one.
  2. Name the host family, and the occasion if the chowki marks one: a new home, a child's birthday, a wedding in the family, or a mannat (a vow) fulfilled.
  3. Give the day and the date, and say whether it is an evening chowki or an all-night jagran.
  4. List the programme in order: the jyot, the bhajans with the mandali's name, the aarti, then the bhandara or prasad, each with its time.
  5. Write the full address with a landmark, and where to park if the lane will be closed for the pandal.
  6. Invite guests सपरिवार (with their whole family), and add a date to reply by only if the bhandara needs a headcount.
  7. Sign with the family's name and a phone number, under दर्शनाभिलाषी (the relatives who look forward to seeing you) or विनीत (the humble hosts) if your family uses them; the meaning of these card words is explained in a separate guide.
How each part of the programme is usually written on a Hindi card, with the Hinglish spelling for WhatsApp
Programme itemOn a Hindi cardIn HinglishWhat to add
Lighting the jyotज्योति प्रचंड, or ज्योति प्रज्वलनJyoti prachand, jyotThe time, and a request to be seated a little before
Bhajan sandhya, bheteinThe mandali's name and the start time
Katha, in many jagransतारा रानी की कथाTara Rani ki kathaThe time near dawn, if the mandali gives one
AartiThe time, and that prasad follows
Bhandara, prasadThe time, and a reply date if you need a headcount

Many Punjabi cards write ज्योति प्रचंड for the lighting of the jyot, while others write the more formal ज्योति प्रज्वलन; both are understood. Bhetein (भेंटें) are devotional songs to Mata Rani, a word heard most in the Punjabi tradition. Some families also add a line at the foot of the card asking guests to cover their heads in the darbar, or to wear red or yellow. Add it only if your family follows it.

For a chowki in a new home or on a child's birthday

Many families hold a chowki to give thanks when something good has happened in the house. If the chowki is part of a house-warming, the griha pravesh invitation message guide has wording for the havan and the griha pravesh itself.

For a chowki in a new home (Hindi)

Jagran invitation in Hindi for an all-night programme

A jagran invitation must say plainly that the programme runs through the night, and give the time the jyot is lit and the time of the morning aarti, so guests can choose when to come. Many jagrans include the katha of Tara Rani towards dawn; whether yours does, and when, is for the mandali to tell you.

Short mata ki chowki messages for WhatsApp

A mata ki chowki message on WhatsApp works best as four or five short lines: the guest's name, the date and time, one line about the programme, the invitation link on a line of its own, and your name. Call elders and close relatives first, and send the link after the call.

To an elder relative (Hindi)

Aap aayenge to Maa ka darbar poora lagega. Nimantran, samay aur pata is link mein hai: [link] Aapki prateeksha rahegi. [aapka naam]
To friends and neighbours (Hinglish)
Jai Mata Di [naam], Is [din] shaam [samay] baje ghar par Mata ki Chowki hai. Bhajan, aarti aur uske baad bhandara. Pariwar ke saath zaroor aana, aur bata dena kitne log aaoge. [link] [aapka naam]

Jai Mata Di. Aaj shaam [samay] baje jyot jalegi aur [samay] baje se bhajan shuru honge. Aarti ke baad bhandara hai. Pata aur map is link mein hai: [link] Maa ke darbar mein milte hain.
For the society or mohalla WhatsApp group (Hinglish)
Raat [samay] baje jyot jalegi, subah aarti ke baad bhandara. Sabhi pariwar saadar aamantrit hain. [link] Aayojak: [naam], [phone]

A group message suits a jagran that is open to the whole society. For relatives, a message to each person, with their name in the first line, reads as an invitation rather than a notice. More patterns for the lines above a link, written for weddings but just as useful here, are in our wedding invitation message guide for WhatsApp.

Bilingual and English wording for friends from other states

Colleagues and friends from other states may never have been to a chowki, so an English or bilingual invitation should say what happens and what to expect. Keep the words that have no neat English match, such as jyot, aarti and bhandara, and explain each one once.

English message to a friend who has not been to a chowki
Hi [name], We are holding a Mata ki Chowki at home on [date], from [time] in the evening. It is an evening of bhajans for the Goddess, sung by a mandali (a devotional singing group), with an aarti at the end and a meal of prasad called the bhandara. You do not need to know the bhajans. Please cover your head in the puja area; a dupatta or a handkerchief is fine, and we will keep some at the door. Shoes come off outside. Details and map: [link] We would love to have you there. [Your name]

Keep the line about covering the head only if your family asks guests to.

English invitation to an all-night jagran
Jai Mata Di We are holding an all-night Mata ka Jagran on [date]. The jyot is lit at [time] pm, [mandali's name] sings through the night, and the jagran closes with the aarti at about [time] am. Come for as long as you can: an hour in the evening is as welcome as the whole night. The bhandara is served from [time]. [Address] [link] [Your names]

Should you ask for a reply to a mata ki chowki invitation?

Ask for a reply when you are cooking for a bhandara or a sit-down meal, and skip it when the chowki is open to the whole lane. A headcount tells the halwai how much prasad to make, and tells you how many durries and chairs to lay out.

Make the question easy to answer. End the message with a direct question, such as "कितने लोग आएँगे?" (how many of you will come?), and a date to reply by, a few days before the chowki. A reply with a number in it is easier to add up than a thumbs-up, and WhatsApp replies stay on your phone under each guest's name.

Elders are the exception. For the eldest relatives, a phone call or a visit says more than any message, and their answer comes in the same call. If most guests live in your own lane, a word at the door or a printed card may be all the invitation you need.

On the invitations we make at Sadar Nimantran (sadarnimantran.in), the guest taps yes or no and picks how many are coming, and WhatsApp opens with that reply written out, addressed to the host; replies do not pass through us. In the Sethi family's chowki sample, the guest lights the jyot to open the invitation, and the programme, a Google Maps button and the reply form follow. Our mata ki chowki invitation card page shows what else one can carry.

Live samples: the Sethi family's Mata ki Chowki in Janakpuri, New Delhi, in Hindi; a Griha Pravesh at Mishra Niwas, Lucknow, also in Hindi; and Heer's first Lohri in Ludhiana, where the guest feeds the bonfire. All names are made up; more are in all samples.

Questions people ask

How should I write a mata ki chowki invitation?

Start with जय माता दी or a verse to the Goddess, then name your family and the reason for the chowki, if there is one. Give the date, the time the jyot is lit, the mandali, the aarti and the bhandara or prasad, and the address with a landmark. Close by inviting guests with their families, and sign with the family name and a phone number.

What is the difference between a mata ki chowki and a jagran?

A mata ki chowki is usually an evening programme of a few hours: the jyot is lit, the mandali sings, and it ends with the aarti and prasad. A jagran, or jagrata, goes on through the night and usually closes around dawn with the aarti, often after the katha of Tara Rani. Timings and order vary, so ask your mandali.

Do I need an RSVP for a mata ki chowki?

Not always. If the chowki is open to the whole lane or society, no reply is needed. If you are cooking for a bhandara or a sit-down meal, ask guests how many will come and by which date to tell you, so the halwai can plan the prasad. With elders, ask on the phone instead.

Can I send a mata ki chowki invitation on WhatsApp?

Yes. Write a few lines with the guest's name, the date and the time, put the invitation link or card on its own line, and sign with your name. Call elders and close relatives before you send it. A single message to the society group suits a jagran open to everyone; relatives are better invited one by one.

What do you write at the top of a mata ki chowki card?

Most cards open with ॥ . Some families print ॥ above it, or a verse to the Goddess such as Use the opening your family uses on its other cards, and ask an elder if you are unsure.
